Marjorie R "Marge" Smith

March 5th, 1929 to March 29th, 2018

Marjorie Ruth “Marge” Smith, 89, of Port Huron Township, died Thursday, March 29, 2018 in McLaren Port Huron after a brief illness.

She was born March 5, 1929 in Port Huron to the late Carl A. and Florence (Scheonrock) May. Her first husband, Frederick J. “Jack” Helwig, died in a tragic diving accident on Black River in August of 1955, soon after their marriage. She then married Donald Owen Smith in Port Huron on May 16, 1958. He died on May 24, 1983.

Mrs. Smith was a 1947 graduate of Port Huron High School and worked at Women’s Benefit Association and Mueller Brass Company. After her children were born, she became the bookkeeper at May-Wilbert Vault Company for many years, working in the family business with her father, brother and husband.

Marge was a life-long member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and the Mary-Martha Guild. She loved working at the church with her J.O.Y. Club on funeral luncheons, suppers and beef pasty sales. She was a long-time member of the Elks Lodge (B.P.O.E. #343) and loved euchre, bowling and snowmobiling. She enjoyed time with family at her Lewiston cabin. She was loved by her family and friends and was always ready to have fun with them.

She is survived by two children, Carl (Debbie) Smith of Kimball Township and Donna Smith (Mike Moran) of Port Huron; three grandchildren, Jim (Stacy) Gross II of Florence, Arizona, J. Mike Gross of Ypsilanti and Adam (Jennifer) Gross of Gray, Georgia; her great grandchildren, Madison, Conor, Danny, Ava & Audrey Gross; a sister, Barbara J. Randall, and a brother, Donald C. (Eleanor) May; a sister-in-law, Edna Boughner of Clio; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 in St. John’s United Church of Christ, 710 Pine Street, Port Huron. Dr. Richard E. Hotchkin will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron. Pallbearers will be Greg May, Todd May, Doug May, Mike Gross, Noel Leach, Jeff Hart, David Hart, Adam and James Gross.
