Ruth F Gilman

Ruth F. Gilman, 90, of Port Huron, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012.

She was born on March 14, 1921 in Stoneham, Massachusetts to the late John and Grace Gilman.

Ruth graduated from the Lawrence Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Medford, Massachusetts. She received her RN in 1943 and taught nursing for four years. She then attended Boston University and received a BSNE and MSN from the Catholic University of America. She continued to teach in Schools of Nursing in Detroit, Washington, D.C., Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Dubuque and Sioux City, Iowa before moving to Port Huron, Michigan in 1973. She was an administrator in the Mercy Hospital Department of Nursing for nine years until her retirement in 1983. She also taught at Georgetown University and Mercy College. She was a Director of the National Council of Catholic Nurses and held offices in her Alumnae Associations and the American Nurses Association. She was a member of the National League of Nursing Education, Pi Gamma Mu and Sigma Theta Tau.

She was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Community. She was also a member of the Secular Institute of Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ, founded in the USA in 1953.

She is survived by her nephew, William C. Hale. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Ludden and Paul F. Gilman; and a sister, Dorothy C. (Eugene) Hale.

A Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, February 27, 2012 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Port Huron with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m.
