John W Hurley

February 16th, 1923 to September 19th, 2012

John W. "Jack" Hurley, Sr., 89, of Marysville, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born February 16, 1923 in Port Huron to the late William and Irene Hurley. He married Valorie Morgan on March 24, 1945 in Smiths Creek.

Mr. Hurley graduated from Marysville High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Pennsylvania during World War II. He founded and owned Marysville School Bus, Inc. for many years, which is now operated by his son, John. He served as Mayor of Marysville from April 1969 to November 1971 and served on the city council from 1987 to 1991. He was a member and former Chairman of the St. Clair County Board of Commissioners, serving from Jan. 1973 to Dec. 1984. He served on the St. Clair County Community Mental Health Board and was involved in the formation of the Woodland Developmental Center. He was a member of American Legion Marysville Post #449, Marysville Lodge #498 F. & A.M. and the Marysville Lions Club. He was a founding member of All Saints Episcopal Church. Jack enjoyed boating, fishing and freighter watching.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Valorie; four children, Janice Hurley McDonald, John (Vickie) Hurley II, Judy Hurley and Joseph Hurley; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Chris) Giambelluca, Valorie (Brian) Holt, Jodie (Jason) Hansen, John (Monica) Hurley III, Janae Hurley, Sean Hurley and Ryan Hurley; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Pat Firton; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the Marysville Funeral Home. A Masonic Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 24, 2012 in the Marysville Funeral Home. The Reverend Tracie Loffhagen of All Saints Episcopal Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Pallbearers will be John Hurley III, Jason Hansen, Sean Hurley, Ryan Hurley Brian Holt, Chris Giambelluca, Steve Sawdon and Keith Miller. Memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church.
