Dorothy Velma Uthes, 92, of Marysville, died Wednesday, January 29, 2014 in Marwood Nursing and Rehab following a long struggle from a stroke.

She was born March 7, 1921 in Port Huron to the late William and Winifred Gawne and was a lifelong area resident. She married Roy Uthes on January 31, 1944.

Dorothy loved to bowl, bake, play cards with her friends, play Bingo, go to casinos, and watch the Tigers’ baseball games. She also loved to travel and she and Roy went on many vacations, including to Thailand several times, California and Europe. She was best known for her beautiful poetry which touched many lives. Dorothy was very patriotic and very proud to have served in the United States Army Air Corps. She loved marching in the Memorial Day parades.

She was an active member of Marysville United Methodist Church, attending annual conferences in Adrian for 18 years and writing the church newsletter for many years. She also belonged to Marysville American Legion Post #449 and Heart Link and was secretary of the Port Huron Ostomy Club, editing their newsletter for over 25 years.

Dorothy is survived by her husband of 70 years, Roy; a daughter, Lynda (Joe) Demeter of Texas; a son, Jon (Mali) Uthes of Las Vegas, Nevada; three granddaughters, Jennifer Lovecchio of California, Jodi (Josh) Walls of Texas and Melissa Uthes of California; a grandson, James Uthes of California; four great grandsons, Destin Ferguson, Jake and Justin Lovecchio, and Foster Walls; a great granddaughter, Adela Walls; and a very special niece, Dawn (Ron) Dunlap of Smiths Creek.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Edward “Little Joe” Demeter; three sisters, June (George) Williams, Geneva (Bob) Horn and Ruth (Bill) Damaschke; and a special nephew, Jeff Dunlap.

Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday in the Marysville Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, February 3, 2014 in the Marysville Funeral Home with visiting beginning at 10 a.m. The Reverend Max Amstutz will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery, Marysville. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Air Force and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.

Because of Dorothy’s love for animals, memorials may be made to the Blue Water Area Humane Society.
