Sophia Dzurnak
Sophia Dzurnak, 94, of Marysville, died Thursday, January 1, 2015 at home surrounded by her family.
She was born February 7, 1920 in Freeport, Ohio to the late Jacob and Catherine Kovalcik. She married John J. Dzurnak on July 17, 1948 in Detroit. He died June 13, 2009.
Sophia worked in Columbus, Ohio before moving to Detroit in 1946 where she worked for the Veterans Administration. After her marriage, she became a homemaker and loving mother to five children. She was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church. She enjoyed bingo, playing cards, family trips to the casino, watching birds from her window, tending flowers, gardening, volleyball, cake decorating and spending time with her family.
She will be sadly missed by her five children, Daniel Dzurnak of Boca Raton, Florida, Richard (Cathy) Dzurnak of Clinton Township, Stephen Dzurnak of Marysville, Mark (Jenni) Dzurnak of Fort Gratiot and Patricia (Richard) Pontello of Fort Gratiot; eight grandchildren, Julie, Amy, Kristie, Lindsey, Jacob, Alenna, Alex and Joey Dzurnak; a sister, Sue Balog of Clinton Township; sister-in-law, Irene Koval of Westerville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.
Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015 in the Marysville Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
Mrs. Dzurnak will lie in state in St. Christopher Catholic Church on Sunday, January 4, 2015 from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m. The Reverend Arthur Baranowski will officiate.
Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery, Marysville.
Memorials may be made to St. Christopher Catholic Church, the Alzheimer’s Association or the family.
