Norma Ruth Godwin, 86, of Marysville, died Thursday, June 15, 2017.
She was born June 27, 1930 in Zeeland, Michigan, to the late Earl C. and Thelma VerHage. She married Maurice C. Godwin on June 25, 1966 in St. Clair. They shared a love of music, the outdoors, travel, reading and just being together. He died September 4, 2010.
A graduate of Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, Norma was a teacher and librarian for Algonac, East China and Port Huron Schools before her retirement in June of 1973. In retirement, she volunteered at the American Red Cross and loved serving as a Detroit Institute of Arts docent. She was a 30 year member of First Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Piecemakers quilting and stitching group. She was proud of the 100 plus Tartan banners she made for the annual Kirking of the Tartans. Norma treasured spending time with her family.
She is survived by her step-children, Lawrence (Sandra) Godwin of Menominee, Daniel (Laurie Miles) Godwin of Tawas, and Ruth Godwin of Billings, Montana; daughter-in-law, Jan Godwin of Rochester; six grandchildren, Nicholas (Laura) Godwin, Katharine (Matthew) Goldman, Benjamin (Laura) Godwin, Hayley (Daniel) Stepaniak, Elizabeth (Todd) Hunt, and Samantha Wattles; 8 great grandchildren; a brother, Ward L. VerHage of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; sisters-in-law, Sally Hansen and Laura Godwin; beloved nephew, Captain Eric H. (Liz) VerHage, USN of Alexandria, Virginia; several great nieces and great nephews; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by a step-son, Douglas Godwin.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 in Marysville Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 2 p.m. The Reverend Jason E. Pittman of First Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Evergreen Cemetery, 3415 E. Hill Road, Grand Blanc.
