Hamilton J. Benham
Hamilton J. Benham, 85, of Port Huron, died Friday, October 28, 2011.
He was born June 6, 1926 in Detroit to the late Will and Estelle Hamilton.
Mr. Benham attended Merharry Medical College and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wayne State University. He taught in the Detroit public high schools, at Wayne County Community College and Wayne State University. He was a Navy medic during World War II, a community activist and co-founder of the Cass Corridor Community Food Co-op. He enjoyed golfing, tennis and taking his grandchildren to Belle Isle.
He is survived by three children, Sharon Bender, Judith Benham a.k.a. Muqarrabah Kendrick and Hamilton J. Benham; 12 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.
A Mass and celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2011 in St. Joseph Catholic Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Brian Cokonougher will officiate.
Burial will be in Allied Veterans Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.
