Edward "Ted" R. Birtch

October 13th, 1941 to January 1st, 2023

Edward “Ted” R. Birtch, 81, of Avoca, died Sunday January 1, 2023.

He was born October 13, 1941 in Port Huron to the late Robert and Mary Birtch. He married Christine Armstrong on September 20, 1986 in North Street United Methodist Church.

Ted was employed in the construction industry with Laborers Local #463 prior to his retirement.

Ted enjoyed riding motorcycles, drag strip racing, and swimming, along with both playing and watching hockey and baseball. He liked spending time by the Blue Water Bridge, going hunting in the U.P., and watching old western movies. Ted especially loved traveling with his family on many vacations. He enjoyed fishing and driving the pontoon on the Au Sable River. Ted loved camping at the family property in Oscoda and at Fort Wilderness Campground in Florida. He was famous for telling the best and most hilarious campfire stories which everyone always enjoyed. He always looked forward to the many phone calls from his family and friends, especially his two sons and sister out of state.

More than anything Ted loved his family. “Papa’s” life really changed when his grandsons were born. It went from watching westerns and relaxing, to watching cartoons and babysitting his “best little buddies” everyday. They stole his heart and his remote. He will be forever in our hearts.

He is survived by his wife, Christine; daughter, Jennifer (Jim) Armstrong-Scally; three sons, Christopher Armstrong-Birtch, Ted Birtch, and Steve Birtch; grandsons, Jaxson and Jace; sister, Sandra (Dale) Newell; brother-in-law, Jack (Korin) Armstrong; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Birtch; brothers-in-law, Roger Debuf and Glenn Armstrong; parents-in-law, Jacqueline and Jack Armstrong.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, June 11, 2023 in the Flag Plaza by the Blue Water Bridges. The Reverend Max Amstutz will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Avoca United Methodist Church or to the wishes of the family.
