David K Smith

David K. Smith, 61, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma passed away after a long and hard fought battle with cancer on Saturday, February 22, 2014.

He was born January 9, 1953 in Port Huron, Michigan to the late Louis and Jean Smith. One of his happiest moments came after 37 years of life together, when he and Jim McPhee were finally legally married on September 3, 2013 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Dave lived his early adult years in Scotland and worked in the North Sea oilfields. In

1977, he and Jim moved to Houston, Texas and lived in various cities in Texas before moving to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 2003. Dave enjoyed highly successful careers in energy production, health care, and real estate including many years as an agent and professional training coach at David Weekly Homes in Houston. He was a Regional Director for the American Red Cross in North Texas and a Regional Disaster Coordinator in Montgomery County, Texas. He served on the board of Carpenter Square Theater and on the Oklahoma State Board of Health Advisory Committee for several years. He also worked to improve the lives of disabled clients at Devereau Foundation in Victoria, Texas; Edgemeade in Mineral Wells, Texas. In recent years, he was an enthusiastic volunteer at Dale Rogers Training Center in Oklahoma City. Dave joined the Jewish Faith in 1995 and was active in his congregations in The Woodlands and Oklahoma City.

The world has produced few men with such a buoyant optimism and engaging sense of humor, combined with a serious passion for justice and kindness in this world. Dave had a personality that touched the lives of everyone he encountered. His humor and zeal for life will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his life partner of 37 years, James “Jim” H. McPhee; son, John (Angel) Jiminez; grandson, Jonathan; sister, Tina (David) Dobney; nieces and nephews, David (Lisa) Dobney, Douglas Dobney, Julianna Dobney, Daniel (Keri) Dobney, Gabriel Dobney, Diana McFey, Laura (Jim) Swan, Henry Swan, Andrew (Andrea) McPhee, and Lisa McPhee; brother-in-law Thomas (Betsy) McPhee; “mom”, Betty McPhee; and many treasured cousins and steadfast friends. Dave was that rare person who had more true friends than can be named, and he cared passionately about all of them.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014 in the Marysville Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. The Rev. Max Amstutz will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron.
