J. Carveth Mitchell

January 20th, 1935 to October 14th, 2014
John Carveth Mitchell, 79, of Fort Gratiot, went into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, October 14, 2014.

He was born January 20, 1935 in East Detroit to the late Cecil and Elsa Mitchell. He married Marilyn J. Stein on October 6, 1961 in Port Huron.

Mr. Mitchell was a Chemist with the City of Detroit Water Works for 40 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. He graduated from Hillsdale College and during his high school and college years, he worked at Semrau’s Greenhouse in East Detroit. His love of plants and birds continued throughout his life and he was a member of the MSU Master Gardeners program.

Carveth had a passion to serve his Lord. He was a long time member of Griswold Street Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and member of the mission board. He was a member of Gideons International, served on the board for Francophone Ministries, and with his wife, Marilyn, was involved for many years with the Word of Life program at Griswold Street Baptist and college and career ministry at Ross Bible Church.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn; three sons, David (Sandra) Mitchell, Daniel (Kimberly) Mitchell and Nathan (Kelley) Mitchell; six grandchildren, Megan, Luke, Jonah, Malachi, Ryan and Carrie Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, three sisters and a granddaughter, Emma Kate.

Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. Friday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2014 in Griswold Street Baptist Church. The Reverend James Pettit will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David, Daniel, Nathan, Luke, Jonah, Malachi and Ryan Mitchell, Darwin McLeod, Lauren Hager and Paul Ask.

Memorials may be made to Griswold Street Baptist Church or Gideons International.
