Mary G Jeffries

Mary Gwendolyn Jeffries, 95, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 after a long illness.

She was born April 8, 1920 in McBain to the late Edna and Rev. Benedict Bergstrom. She married Samuel H. Jeffries in 1942 in Ft. Riley, Kansas when Samuel was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He died February 7, 1985.

Mrs. Jeffries was known for her beautiful voice. She sang on the radio on WHLS in the 1940s and at the Red Fox Ballroom under the Harrington Hotel during the Big Band era. She was very active in the Marysville United Methodist Church. In the 1950s, she was one of the organizers of the first Women’s Wesleyan Service Guild in the church, which later changed its name to United Methodist Women’s Guild. She was a lay leader, church secretary, choir member, and Sunday School and Bible School teacher.

Gwen was also a member of the Marysville High School Football Booster Club, having her three boys playing football. She was a Past Matron of the Eastern Star in 1961. Gwen lived her life as a Christian lady and was known for her infectious laugh which will be much missed. She had many, many friends in her 95 years and most recently found more at Marwood Manor Nursing Home. She loved them all!

She is survived by two sons, James (Clara) Jeffries and John A. (Vicky) Jeffries; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Jeffries; grandchildren, Jessica (Todd) Tapert, David Jeffries and John M. Jeffries; great grandchildren, Jaidyn and Blake Tapert and Alexus Jeffries. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jeffries.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday in the Marysville Funeral Home, 1200 Michigan Avenue.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2015 in Marysville United Methodist Church with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. The Rev. Barbara Welbaum will officiate.

Burial will follow in Riverlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Harold Rockwell, Larry Welser, David Jeffries, Todd Tapert, John Jeffries and Tim Rockwell.

Memorial contributions may be made to Marysville United Methodist Church.
