Rachel D Erno

March 12th, 1925 to March 25th, 2016

Rachel D. Erno, 91, of Kimball Township, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 25, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 12, 1925 in Gaastra, Michigan to the late Neil and Florence Phillips. Rachel spent her childhood in the Upper Peninsula, graduated from Iron River High School and left immediately for the Lower Peninsula in search of adventure and opportunity. After working at numerous jobs including Michigan Bell Telephone, she met and married the love of her life, Elmer C. “Al” Erno on September 14, 1946. Together they created a loving family of six children who will miss her greatly.

Rachel returned to school at the age of 50, earning an LPN degree, and then worked for a number of years at Mercy Hospital in Port Huron. Al preceded her in death on April 15, 1994.

Known for her kindness, interest in people, her beautiful smile, and sense of humor, Rachel took pride in and loved her family unconditionally. She also enjoyed selling produce grown on her farm, and was sometimes called “the Tomato Lady”.

She is survived by all six of her children, Maureen Docherty, Dale Erno, Janet (Greg) Shannon, Karen (Stephan) Burdick, David (Patti) Erno and Steven (Marlene) Erno; 14 grandchildren, Mark (Michelle) Docherty, Rebecca (Jared) Chauvin, Kelly Shannon (John) DeWeerdt, Andrew (Abby) Shannon, Ryan (Nicole) Shannon, Matthew Shannon, Scott and Julianne Erno, Natalie and Caroline Burdick, and Sarah, Josh, Daniel, and Anastasia Erno; seven great grandchildren, Lynsey DeWeerdt, Jenna and Ella Docherty, Alex and Aidan MacDonald, Sullivan Shannon and Summer Shannon; a brother, Terrence (Marie) Phillips; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathryn Polich; brothers, Hugh and Norman Phillips; and son-in-law, Robert Docherty.

Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday in the Marysville Funeral Home.

Mrs. Erno will lie in state in St. Christopher Catholic Church on Thursday, March 31, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.

Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery, Marysville

Rachel’s family would like to thank the staff at Wadhams Valley for their kindness and excellent care.
