Merle E MacJennett

August 4th, 1922 to July 18th, 2016

Merle E. MacFarlane MacJennett, 93, of Port Huron, passed away Monday, July 18, 2016.

She was born August 4, 1922 in the wee Scottish hamlet of Camlachie, Ontario, the second child of Jack and J. Laurine Smith MacFarlane. Merle enjoyed growing up in the company of her siblings, Bob, Don and Alice and surrounded by grandparents, many doting aunts, uncles and cousins by the dozen. After leaving the one room school near Camlachie, she attended S.C.I.T.S. in Sarnia and was a graduate of Sarnia General Hospital’s School of Nursing in 1944. Her love of her fellow nurses and the work they did led her in her later years to serve as Sarnia General Nurses Alumnae President for several years.

On June 28, 1947, Merle became Mrs. Gordon Coulter MacJennett. In the following years, they became the parents of three lovely and caring daughters. Gordon passed away December 3, 2008.

Most important to Merle were her family, near and far, and her many lifelong and new friends. Over the course of her lifetime she had many interests including church life, large family dinners, picnics in the parks along the water front, genealogy, euchre, baking, sewing, entertaining, travel and photography. She was Gordon’s first mate in his construction business.

Merle was a founding member of the early Mobile Meals, helped develop county wide blood pressure and flu clinics and was a charter member of the Sanborn Gratiot Auxiliary. In addition she served on the board of the Council on Aging, was an active member of the Women’s Association of The First Presbyterian Church and Church Women United of Port Huron. She and her husband were involved in Real Estate and were very instrumental in establishing low-income Senior Citizen Housing in Port Huron.

Merle had a quick and sharp sense of humor, a loving heart and was never happier than when she was in the midst of family and friends.

Merle is survived by her daughters, Sharon MacJennett and husband Kim Rotermund of Boyne City, Diana Wittliff of Marysville (husband, John deceased in 2006) and Debra (Flip) Williamson of Port Huron; her grandchildren, Michael Wittliff of Wisconsin and Stephanie Wittliff of Florida; sisters-in-law, Dora (Bob) MacFarlane, Dorothy (Don) MacFarlane; brother-in-law, Russ (Alice) Pennington; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, July 23, 2016 in First Presbyterian Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Jason Pittman will officiate. Casual attire is encouraged by the family for the service. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Port Huron or the St. Clair County Council on Aging.

Her family would like to thank the staff at the Manor on Bard Street and Marwood Nursing and Rehab for the loving and tender care which she was given.
