Kathleen "Kay" Clendenney

May 19th, 1920 to August 21st, 2016

Kathleen “Kay” Clendenney, 96, of Fort Gratiot, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2016 at Marwood Manor after a short illness.

Kay was born May 19, 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to the late Herbert and Mary Ann (Smith) Johnson. She married John “Jack” D. MacBeth on January 27, 1945 in Winnipeg. He died December 9, 1966 in Port Huron. She married Dwight E. Clendenney on March 2, 1973. He died January 1, 1996.

Mom always loved being Mom and giving “advice”. She spent many a summer with her family camping, going to little league games, picnicking with other families, watching swimming events, being involved in the YMCA, watching hockey in the winter and dancing whenever possible with Dad or just sitting and playing Bridge or Euchre with friends and almost always going to church on Sundays at First Presbyterian Church in Port Huron. Mom and Dwight loved visiting family across the United States and Canada, dancing, golfing, playing cards, traveling to woodcarving shows and camping with friends. Mom was always active, surprising others when she would get out her black long blade skates and glide on the ice, or canoeing with style in her 60’s. In her later years, Mom loved talking to friends and family on the phone each day (especially Karen) , watching her favorite TV shows, playing Kings in the Corner cards with Carol, Tuesday night Coney Island with Ken, Gail and Olga, a donut with Jan, or coffee with Jim.

Kay worked as a secretary at Harmon, Tibedeau & Wedge, an architectural firm in Port Huron, retiring in 1982. She was member of First Presbyterian Church since 1957 and always enjoyed the “Kirking of the Tartans”.

Kay is survived by three children, Jaki (Don) Oakland of Steamboat Springs, CO, Karen (Denny Woodson) of Jamestown, CA and Ken (Gail) MacBeth of Port Huron. She is also survived by her step-daughter, Carol Moore of Port Huron; by her sister, Joyce Derraugh of Winnipeg, Manitoba; eleven nieces and nephews; and Michelle English (Paul’s wife) of Enterprise, Alabama.

She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Joseph (Patty) Oakland, John Oakland, Nicholas (Barbara) Lapp, Trevor (Tamra) MacBeth, Emily (Jacob) Schmeltzer; 8 step-grandchildren, L. Jayne, Dan, Richard, Chic, and Bret Moore, Kelly (Paul) Anglin, Tracey (Harold) Green and Karla Warner; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Paul MacBeth, on December 1, 2004; her step-daughter, Christine Hernandez; and two sisters, Dorothy Fordyce and Hazel Day.

The family will gather to celebrate her life at a later date. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Marwood Nursing and Rehab for their tender and loving care as well as Amy Watson who was so kind to Kay each Tuesday and caring neighbors, Billy and Dewayne Jex.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 811 Wall Street, Port Huron, MI 48060.
