Roy A Starrs
Roy “Tony” Allen Starrs was born November 19, 1954 to the late Roy “Left-hand Sonny” and Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Sherman in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Roy attended South Middle and Union High school. After high school he enlisted in the Navy. Shortly after his return home he met and married Juanita Coleman. To this union was born one child.
Roy was a very hard working man who loved making his own way working various jobs. He worked at Uptown Cleaners, near downtown Grand Rapids, for approximately 10 years. He worked at Oven Fresh Bakery, also in Grand Rapids. In 2001, he moved to Port Huron, Michigan where his younger sister Dennette Teague resided and where he worked a few factory jobs.
Roy enjoyed cooking, cleaning, barbecuing, playing cards and dominoes, watching sports, and listening to music. He was the biggest jokester and loved to play pranks but he always gave it away with his million dollar smile. He had a smile that would light up the room. His special love was boating and fishing, a passion that he had in common with his father.
Roy departed this life at age 62 on Saturday, January 28, 2017. He leaves to mourn his passing his children, Tomarra (Dorian) Richardson, Marcus Brown, Brandon Mayhue, Sr., and Roy Starrs, Jr., all of Grand Rapids, Michigan; his grandsons, Cristen Woods, Tristan Armstrong, Brandon Mayhue, Jr., Anthony Richardson, Samuel Richardson, and Dacardea Mayhue; granddaughters, Grace Richardson, Vicky Richardson, and Brooklyn Mayhue; one great-granddaughter, Malana Mayhue; two brothers Edward and Leslie “PooPoo” Sherman, each of Grand Rapids, Michigan; five sisters, Dorothy Charlton, Dora Lynn Sherman, Dennette Teague, Carol Denise Sherman, and Annette Latrise Tilmon, all of Grand Rapids, Michigan; step-mother, Lonnie Sherman; step-brothers, Mark and Kurt Martin; step-sisters, Tonya and Angela Martin, and Lesha Hernandez; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Dennis Sherman; one sister, Bobby Jean Sherman; two step-brothers Donald Martin, Jr. and Kevin Martin.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday February 6, 2017 in Brown Hutcherson Ministries, 618 Jefferson Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503 with a family hour beginning at 10 a.m.
