Dr. Eddie J Brown
Dr. Eddie Joe Brown, 80, of Port Huron, died on April 11, 2017.
Dr. Brown was born September 9, 1936 in Washburn, North Dakota, to the late John and Florence Brown. He married Amanda Beck on June 5, 1959 in Eureka, South Dakota.
By raising turkeys, he was able to pursue his dream of attending college. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Jamestown College in 1958; his Master’s degree from the University of North Dakota in 1962, and his Doctorate in Mathematics from Oklahoma State University in 1970.
Dr. Brown taught secondary mathematics for four years, before arriving at St. Clair County Community College in 1963. During his career, he held the position of Department Chair, Quiz Bowl Committee Chair, and worked with the scholarship selection committee. He received several distinguished faculty awards, and in 1991 Dr. Brown was presented a certificate of recognition for his years of dedication and service to mathematics education. He ended his teaching career in 2000.
Perhaps most memorable to many of Dr. Brown’s students was his demanding teaching method of writing on the chalkboard with his right hand, while erasing immediately after with his left.
Dr. Brown was a sports enthusiast, avid reader, enjoyed traveling, loved country/western line and couples dancing, and spent many an hour, country-wide, seeking out the perfect antique “treasure” for Amanda. (Have you seen the crackled glass collection?) He was a longtime member of St. Martin Lutheran Church.
Dr. Brown was also known for driving his cars until they, literally, fell apart. David and Kimberly still recall the 1964 VW bug, which, in time, was void of floorboards in the back. They always felt safe, however, as he always drove far below the posted speed limits.
Dr. Brown is survived by his wife of 57 years, Amanda; two children, David R. (Daretta) Brown and Kimberly K. Brown (Ralph Franklin); three grandchildren, Rebecca (Levi) Jones, Beverly Brown and Emily Brown; a great granddaughter, Hannah Jones; two sisters, Karen Werner and LaBette Peterson; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday and from 6-8 p.m. Friday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Reverend John W. Hitzeroth of Pilgrim Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Washburn, North Dakota.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the St. Clair County Community College Retiree Scholarship Fund, Blue Water Hospice, or St. Martin Lutheran Church. To send condolences, visit www.pollockrandall.com
