C. Lysle Smith

C. Lysle Smith, 86, of Port Huron, died Tuesday, August 22, 2017.

He was born July 1, 1931 in Bad Axe to the late Alger and Irma Smith. He married Betty Gilmour on December 12, 1953 in Port Huron.

Mr. Smith was a 1949 graduate of Port Huron High School where he earned All State honors in basketball. He played basketball two years at the University of Michigan before entering the service. He served in the U.S. Army with the Security Agency and gained recognition as one of the top softball pitchers in the armed services. He worked as a printer at the Times Herald for 38 years. He pitched for a number of Port Huron’s best softball teams and won a number of bowling and golf awards. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, B.P.O.E. Lodge #343, American Legion Charles Hammond Post #8, the Port Huron U.S.B.C. Bowling Association, and was inducted into the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame. He also coached Little League and JV basketball and officiated basketball for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; four children, Debra (Bruce) Larner, Charles (Dawn Peltz) Smith, Thomas (Nancy) Smith and Robert Smith; eight grandchildren, Scott and Amanda Larner, Robert Smith, Rebecca (Brent) Murray, Dr. Danielle (Michael) Finch, Derek Smith, Justin Peltz and Leigh (Jeremy) Espinoza; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Smith and a sister, Marlene Hendrick.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 28, 2017 in First Presbyterian Church with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. The Reverend Jason Pittman will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron. Pallbearers will be Bob Smith, Scott Larner, Derek Smith, Bob Matthews, Steve Rajnay and Austin Henry. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Army and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
