Marian T. Verkest Dunn
Marian Theresa Verkest Dunn, 94, of Marysville, died Saturday, October 21, 2017.
She was born November 15, 1922 in Detroit to the late John Robert and Sadie (O’Neill) Doucet.
The loves of her life were her family and her faith. She married Arthur Joseph “Joe” Verkest on January 23, 1943, and they raised seven children together. Following the example of her mother, she had become involved in church volunteer work while still a student at St. David High School in Detroit.
Following high school, she entered the work force. During the early years of World War II, while working at the Naval Ordnance facility in Warren, she shared a desk on different shifts with Mr. Verkest. That led to their courtship and marriage and a long life together. Mr. Verkest was then a widower with a young son, Ronald, and the family grew to include six more children.
The Verkests lived in Detroit, Warren, and Clawson before moving to their retirement home in Marysville in 1988. Marian, who had returned to work, continued to commute to her job at AT&T, then Michigan Bell, for a few more years. Mr. Verkest died on November 14, 1994.
Marian, who had become involved in religious education and other church programs during their years in Warren and Clawson, became actively involved in parish programs at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Marysville. It was through friends at St. Christopher that she met Louis Dunn, a widower, and they married on June 15, 1996. They traveled and spent many happy hours visiting family and enjoying life together as the grandchildren grew up, married and the great-grandchildren were born. They also actively participated in St. Christopher parish programs. Mr. Dunn died on January 24, 2011. Sustained by the love of her family and her faith, Mrs. Dunn enjoyed the remaining years of her life in Marysville.
Mrs. Dunn is survived by six children, Donna Verkest, John Verkest, Joanne (Art) Wolnowski, Greg (Sharon) Verkest, Peg Majocha, and Paul (Debbie) Verkest; daughter-in-law, Ann Verkest; stepdaughter, Nancy Dunn; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald on March 26, 2002; son-in-law, Pete Majocha on March 17, 2009; sisters, Eileen and Dorothy; and infant sisters, Margaret and Betty.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 in the Marysville Funeral Home. A scripture service will be held at 7:00 pm in the funeral home.
Mrs. Dunn will lie in state from 10:00 am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 26, 2017 in St. Christopher Catholic Church. Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Christopher Catholic Church, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, the St. Clair County Council on Aging or a hospice organization of your choice.
