Kathryn Ann “Katie” Kimmet, 79, of Marysville, died Wednesday, January 3, 2018.
She was born April 28, 1938 to Raymond and Blanche Kimmet in Traverse City. She attended St. Francis schools, graduating in 1956. Katie studied at St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, and received her B.S. from Western Michigan University and M.A. from the University of Kentucky.
Katie was a teacher, guidance counselor, and coach at Marine City High School for over 30 years. She volunteered at Helping Hands Soup Kitchen, River District Hospital Auxiliary, and St. Christopher Catholic Church. She was waterfront director for Flint Girl Scout camps.
In 1988, Katie became the 28th successful recipient of a liver transplant at the University of Michigan Hospital. At her death, she was the longest surviving recipient in Michigan. Her case was used to gain insurance coverage for future recipients.
Katie enjoyed camping and traveled throughout the U.S. and many other countries. She was an avid reader, bowler, and golfer. She enjoyed playing cards, games, slot machines, and crosswords.
She is survived by her sister, Jean (Mike) Jackman of Claremont, California; two nieces, Kathy Dunn of Carlsbad, California, and Ellen Jackman (Verna Sipes) of Lake Arrowhead, California; a nephew, Michael Jackman of San Diego, California; four great nephews; three great great nieces; three great great nephews; and special friends, Gail Lynch, Cathy Markland and Cassandra McCloud. She was preceded in death by her identical twin infant sister.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday in the Marysville Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
Katie will lie in state from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018 in Holy Trinity Parish St. Stephen Catholic Church.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City.
