Vern W Smith
Vern W. Smith, 81, of Marysville died Tuesday, January 30, 2018.
He was born May 1, 1936 in Marysville to the late John and Vera Smith. He married Helene Stevens on April 4, 1959 in Marysville.
Mr. Smith graduated from Marysville High School class of 1955, where he was class president. After high school, he served his country in the U.S. Army for two years. He was then employed with Chrysler Corporation for over 30 years before his retirement in 1994. Vern was the past president of the United Auto Workers Local 375. He was also a member of Marysville American Legion Post #449, The Moose Lodge #158, Maysville Modified Softball League, Marysville “Legion Legends” Golf Group, “Buck Patrol” Hunting Group in Iron Mountain, MI, and many local bowling teams and leagues. He was an avid Detroit Tigers and Marysville Viking sports fan.
Vern was, above all, a family man who loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening, lawn work, playing horseshoes, and walleye fishing “in the creek”.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Helene; daughter, Kathlene (Jon) Watt; son, Kirk (Eileen) Smith; five granddaughters, Kristin (Jon) Sausser, Jenna Lyn (Nolan) Heier, Jalissa Watt, Courtney (Ben) Lupu and Ashley Smith; six great grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Dick Stevens, Rob (Judy) Stevens and Loren Struthers; sisters-in-law, Shirley Smith and Denise Stevens; many nieces and nephews; special family friend, Jackie Watt; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vaughn Smith; sister, Gail Struthers; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Stevens.
Visitation will be from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2018 in the Marysville Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Father Greg Deters will officiate. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be Riverlawn Cemetery.
