Mayme S Sams

January 26th, 1930 to February 10th, 2018

Mayme Sylvia Sams, 88, of Port Huron Township, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018.

May was born on January 26, 1930 in Ramsey, Michigan to the late Matt and Justina Autio. May’s mother was the first generation born in the U.S.; her grandparents (Andrew and Sanna Pelkala) immigrated from Finland and her father immigrated from Finland. She married William ‘Bill’ Sams on November 14, 1949 in Wakefield, Michigan, and they moved to Port Huron, Michigan.

May worked at Michigan Bell as a Telephone Operator for 31 years and retired in 1982. Through the years, May and Bill shared their love of the outdoors with their children and grandchild by spending time at their cabin in northern Michigan, fishing, being near water and taking in peaceful moments. May enjoyed spending time in the kitchen and didn’t need to look at a recipe card to make delicious Finnish pasties.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Sarah Collins; sister, Esther Autio; and son-in-law, Paul Collins.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William Sams; daughter, Linda Collins; son, Paul Sams; mother and stepfather, Justina & Walter Blomberg; and brothers, William and George Autio.

Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held in Woodland Cemetery and a private memorial will take place at a later date at the family cabin in Wolverine, Michigan.

Memorial contributions may be made to Medilodge of Port Huron. Arrangements are by Pollock-Randall Funeral Homes. To send condolences, visit pollockrandall.com
