John W Shonka
John W. Shonka, 56, of Warren, formerly of Port Huron, died unexpectedly Sunday, September 16, 2018.
He was born August 19, 1962 in Detroit to the late Thomas and Rosalie Shonka. He married Julia R. Leighton on June 6, 1986 in Port Huron.
John graduated from Port Huron High School in 1981 and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan University. He worked for Chrysler Corporation (now FCA) at the Warren Stamping Plant for over 24 years. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, writing, drawing, and singing. He was an inventor and patent holder, and a private pilot that enjoyed flying. He participated for many years with Operation Good Cheer flying Christmas presents to children in need. John was a Boy Scout leader, a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Sacred Heart Assembly and a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 13. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Julia; daughter, Danika; sons, Jakub and Thomas; sister, Mary (Mike) Acker; brothers, Daniel (Barb) Shonka, Peter (Heide) Shonka, and Joseph (Carla) Shonka; and 24 nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. Friday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.
Mr. Shonka will lie in state from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018 in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Reverend Zbigniew Zomerfeld will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jakub, Thomas, Dan, Pete and Joe Shonka and Price Smith.
Inurnment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery Columbarium, Port Huron.
Memorial contributions may be made to the children’s education in care of Julia Shonka.
