Joseph C "Joe" Seigh

August 14th, 1926 to July 30th, 2021

Joseph Charles “Joe” Seigh, 94, of Fort Gratiot,Michigan, died Friday, July 30, 2021. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on August 14, 1926 to parents Joseph William and Alma Marie (Steinman) Seigh. He married Christhild Carolyn Seigh (nee Carlsen) August 21, 1948 in Englewood, NJ.They were married 63 years until her passing in 2012. They lived in Bath for over 25 years.

Joe served in the United States Navy, stationed on the USS Kearsarge, during World War II. He graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, and worked as an engineer and in management for IBM for over twenty-five years until his retirement. He pursued many interests in retirement, researching family genealogy, volunteering for the Patten Free Library in Bath, assisting the Cornell Alumni Association, and taking family and visitors on tours of the Kennebec River in his boat, the Caroline.

He was a creative man. He completed sailing ship models using plans from the US Federal Archives. Norwegian style rosemåling decorations and Russian style Easter eggs were among his many other creative projects. He completed a scale model replica of his 200 year old New York state farmhouse in 7 years, using only materials he found on his property there.

He was the king of come-alongs. Using winches and his dear Chris as a counter balance, he single handedly pulled his float and ramp from the Kennebec each autumn until he was well into his 80’s.

He was very fond of orange tabby cats and loved his home and neighbors on the Kennebec. He will be remembered by his loved ones as a kind and gentle man, a man of few words whose love and devotion was demonstrated in so many ways.

He is survived by children Joseph W. of Nashua, NH., Gordon (Connie) of Pleasant Valley, NY, Virginia (John) Coury of Fort Gratiot, MI, Gunnar of Nassau, NY, Peter of Chicago, IL.; Grandchildren, Aaron (Kimberly), Carter (Stephanie), and Katrina Seigh, Katherine and Jack Coury, and great grandchildren Noah, Zoey, Ethan and Gavin; cousins through marriage Douglas (Verne) Solvesen of Georgetown, ME.
