Bessie Smyth

Bessie Ellen Smyth, 83, of Port Huron, died Friday, December 17, 2021.

She was born November 13, 1938 in Capac to the late Mae and Merlin Woods. She married Bennet L. Smyth on February 5, 1966 in Port Huron. He died September 26, 2021.

Bessie graduated from Capac High School and the Port Huron Junior College Nursing Program. She worked for Port Huron Hospital as a pediatric nurse for over 30 years. She loved having children around and babysat for a special family in retirement. Bessie was a lifelong member of St. John’s United Church of Christ where she served on many committees and traveled on several mission trips. She was an avid reader, talented quilter and a problem solver of crossword puzzles. Bessie loved her social activities and belonged to different quilt and sewing groups, volunteered regularly at the soup kitchen and attended Christian music camps and concerts.

She is survived by her children, Benita (Jeff) Davis, Phillip Smyth and Amy (Jamie) Seibert; grandchildren, Amber Davis (Tyler Post), Zach (Hannah) Davis, Aiden and Eliza Seibert; two great grandchildren, Stella and Izabella Post; sister, Mary Woods; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Eric Floyd Smyth; and two brothers, Jerry and Joe Woods.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 in St. John’s United Church of Christ with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. Dr. Richard Hotchkin will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Port Huron Township.
