Fredrick James Surline, 70, of St. Clair Township, died Wednesday, September 6, 2023 following a short illness.

He was born July 15, 1953 in Port Huron to the late Clarence and Carolyn Surline.

Fred joined the U.S. Army as a young man and was stationed in Germany where he met and married Dana Mader on March 17, 1978. After returning to Michigan, Fred joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves, became a machine tool electrician and spent his career with several local manufacturing companies. Fred was very handy and loved any home improvement project, whether it was big or small. He was a talented woodworker, enjoyed tinkering and fixing things and working on cars. There was nothing that he couldn’t fix and he loved helping people with whatever they needed. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dana; two sons, Kenneth J. (Sunny) Surline and Christopher A. Surline; grandson, Ethan; siblings, David Surline, Mitchell (Cindy) Surline, Patrick Surline, Carol Barringer, Nancy Herbert, Sherry Coburn and Tammy (Todd) Gerstenberger; mother-in-law, Marie Mader; sister-in-law, Alena Batchan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his son, Fredrick J. “Freddy” Surline Jr.; two brothers, Thomas and Richard Surline; and his father-in-law, Wolfgang Mader.

A memorial visitation will be from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2023 in the Marysville Funeral Home. Military honors will be held at 6:00 p.m. under the auspices of the U.S. Army and St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard and a concluding prayer will be said at 8:00 p.m.
