Daniel O Torrey
Daniel O. Torrey, 85, of Port Huron, died Monday, October 9, 2023.
He was born May 2, 1938 in Port Huron to the late Daniel E. and Lydia R. Torrey. He met Marcia J. Ingell through mutual friends and they were married on September 26, 1966. She preceded him in death on August 17, 2023 after 56 years of marriage.
Daniel graduated from Port Huron High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Lake Champlain, the aircraft carrier that recovered Alan Shephard’s moon craft from the ocean. Upon completion of his service, he attended and graduated from Michigan State University. Mr. Torrey spent his career as a science teacher with the Port Huron Area School District, retiring from Fort Gratiot Middle School. He was a lifelong collector of model trains and belonged to the local train club.
He is survived by cousins, Tom (Cathy) Torrey, Suzanne (Jerry) Hosner and Marc (Lynn) Whitney; dear long-time friends, Eric and Lura Opperthauser; and several other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcia; son, Stephen S. Torrey in 2007; and four siblings, Lillian Warren, Joyce Ernst, Jeanette Chong and Neil Torrey.
Graveside committal services will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Fort Gratiot Township. The Reverend Dr. G. Patrick Thompson will officiate. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Navy and St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Clair County Veterans Affairs Emergency Relief Fund.
