Dorothy M Craig
Dorothy Mae Austerberry Craig, 92 of Fort Gratiot, Michigan went to be with the Lord Monday, October 16, 2023.
Dorothy was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 2, 1931, daughter of Earl and Mae (Turcotte) Austerberry. The Austerberry family moved to Grosse Ile, Michigan and Dorothy graduated from Grosse Ile High School. Living on Grosse Ile, the Austerberry family enjoyed summers boating on the Great Lakes. Dorothy went on to study at the University level and also received her certified nurse’s aide designation.
Dorothy owned and operated a pet store with her first husband Kenneth Johnson in Parma, Ohio. Dorothy later moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and worked as a nurse's aide. It was there in Fort Lauderdale where Dorothy met George Craig and they were married in 1993. Dorothy and George were often referred to as "two peas in a pod." They both loved fishing and one of their favorite spots was off the Florida coast near Sanibel Island. George, an avid race car fan, introduced Dorothy to the sport and they spent many Saturday nights at the car races in Miami. After George's passing, Dorothy moved to Fort Gratiot, Michigan to be close to her sister, Mary.
Dorothy was an active member of Thumb Land Conservancy, an avid gardener, and her passion for nature was evident in her ongoing care for the wildlife on her property. Dorothy was a supporter of the Port Huron/Sarnia International Symphony and also enjoyed attending Port Huron Town Hall.
Dorothy had a knack for easy conversation which usually included lots of laughter. She was kind, generous, warm and accepting, always allowing everyone to be their true selves with no expectations or imposition. Dorothy will be remembered and missed by her family and friends for her wonderful sense of humor, as well as for her caring, loving ways.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, husband George Craig, her sister Mary, and brothers Joseph and Charles.
Dorothy is survived by her thirteen nieces and nephews, her extended family, and many dear friends.
As per Dorothy's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. The family requests memorials be made to 🔗Thumb Land Conservancy, 🔗Visiting Nurses Association & Blue Water Hospice, 🔗Humane Society of Saint Clair County, 🔗Best Friends Animal Society, or a charity of choice.
