Delbert M. Bates Jr., 69, of Port Huron, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 3, 2023.
He was born July 27, 1954 in Port Huron to the late Priscilla and Delbert Bates Sr.
Delbert was a firefighter with the City of Port Huron for 30 years before his retirement in 2004. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed cooking, including frying fish and making zucchini bread. He loved golfing, watching the Detroit Lions and college football.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Alfreda; children, Delbert Bates III, Michelle Chisholm, Theresa (Charles) Rice and Brandi Dean; grandchildren, Shadai, De’Marie, Paris, James “LJ”, Jy’Asia Chisholm, Lajada Chisholm, Braylon Bates and Terez Watkins; great grandchildren, Aaliyah and Silayah; brothers, Larry (Denise) Bates and Daniel (Lybrina) Bates; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mattie Pettway, Marceda Miller, Velma Dupree, Cappa Culpepper, Rosamina Culpepper, Eddie (Prescilla) Jemison, Jewell Graham, Amy (Richard) Hunter and Geneva Mitchell; many nieces and nephews, including Larry Haskins; and special cousin, Carroll Bates Dinkins Beauford. He was preceded in death by his siblings, William Griffith, Mary Sutton and Ernest Bates; and step-mother, Alma Bates.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Monday, December 11, 2023 in the Marysville Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Loretta Hazely will officiate.
Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron.
