Wendell Corey Cates, 55, of Port Huron, died Sunday, December 31, 2023.
He was born November 16, 1968 in Port Huron to the late Lester and Meredith Cates.
Wendell graduated from Port Huron High School in 1986, where he was a member of the Big Red Marching Machine and played baseball. He was employed at Intertape Polymer Group prior to his retirement. Wendell was a mentor to many area youth as a flag football and basketball coach at Cleveland School for over twenty years and also coached little league baseball, hockey, girls softball and volunteered at SONS Outreach. Wendell loved fishing and music, especially playing drums. At his passing he became an organ donor as his last gift to the community.
He is survived by his wife, Tracy; children, Corey Cates, Shayna Cates (Daniel Chapman, Sr.), Darien Cates, Tatiana Cates, Carl Cates, and bonus son, Brandon Sumner; grandchildren, Nevaeh Cates-Hall, Skyee Hall, Meela Kessel, Richard Hall, Jr., and Daniel Chapman, Jr.; sisters, Marla (Randy) Willis, and Dionne Jackson; brother, Roman; sisters-in-law, Jessica Sera and Jamie (Dave) Sera-May, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Great Commission Church, 2524 Vanness St., Port Huron, with visitation beginning at 12 noon. The Reverend Jeff Cates will officiate.
