Richard D "Dick" Harju

Richard D. “Dick” Harju, 87, of Fort Gratiot, died Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

He was born July 24, 1936 in Rudyard to the late Wilfred and Sylvia Harju. He married Delores “Dee” McPherson on August 23, 1958.

Dick served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was employed with Plumbers Local #98 for many years before his retirement. He was a member of American Legion Charles Hammond Post #8 and B.P.O.E. Lodge #343, and a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, softball and hockey.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dee; three sons, Mark (Julie), Todd (Shelley) and Neil (Sheryl) Harju; seven grandchildren, Sarabeth (Richard) Schaaf, Olivia (Jordan) Boyd, Lauren (Austin Struthers), Heather Harju, Michael (Casey) Harju, Ryan Harju and Kristin (Jason) Diaz; three great grandchildren, Cameron, Natalie and Zoey Harju; and many loving nieces and nephews from Sault Ste. Marie.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fort Gratiot. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Coast Guard and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
