Joseph M Tokarski

Joseph M. Tokarski, 77, of Avery Township, formerly of Port Huron, died Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at MyMichigan Health in Alma after a long illness.

He was born September 18, 1946 in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the 6th of 11 children, born to the late Joseph and Mary Tokarski.

Joseph was a 1964 graduate of St. Stephen Catholic High School after which he immediately joined the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country in Thailand and Vietnam and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.

On the GI Bill he attended Michigan State University where he became a Civil Rights Activist and was a poll watcher in Mississippi. He graduated from MSU with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1972. He then went on to work at Chrysler Corporation and retired after 30 years of service.

On September 29, 1979 he married Diane Seaton in Goodells, Michigan. They were happily married for 44 years before his passing. Joe and Diane shared many adventures with competitive archery, jeeping, hiking, hunting, fishing and kayaking many lakes and rivers in Michigan. He loved to share a campfire with family and friends.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Michigan Bow Hunters Association, Pheasants Forever, National Wild Turkey Federation, Northeastern Quality Deer Management Association, Michigan Commemorative Bucks, Hillman Sportsman’s Club, Elk Country Jeepers and Canada Creek Ranch Association.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Diane Tokarski; sister, Mary Jo Lesher of Stockton, California; brothers, Gerald Tokarski of Clyde, Michigan, Thomas (Sandy) Tokarski of Bloomington, Indiana and James (Jean) Tokarski of Rochester Hills, Michigan; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Tokarski; sisters, Jean, Katherine and Barbara; and brothers, John, Robert, and Michael.

Private graveside services will be held at Christian Memorial Cultural Center in Peck, Michigan.

A memorial event to celebrate Joe’s life will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, April 13, 2024 in V.F.W. May O’Brien Post #8465, 3815 Knapp Avenue, Port Huron. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Air Force and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard. A luncheon will follow.

The family prefers memorial contributions be made in Joe’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
