Walter J Caughel Sr.

July 1st, 1938 to January 25th, 2024

Walter John Caughel, Sr., 85, of Wales Township, joined his beloved wife and went to be with his Lord peacefully at home on Thursday, January 25, 2024.

He was born July 1, 1938 in Watertown Township in Sanilac County, Michigan to the late Cecil and Ila Caughel. He lived in several locations including Flint and Sandusky, but was raised mostly in Goodells, Michigan.

He married the love of his life, Norma Jean Hill on April 2, 1960 in Goodells and afterwards built a new home on the property where his wife grew up. There they had four children, raised three and created a home full of love, laughter and happy memories. She preceded him in death on December 28, 2017 after 57 years of marriage.

Walter attended Mt. Carmel High School in Jackson, Kentucky, then went on to serve in the U.S. Army, where he got his GED. He was employed with Prestolite Wire for 32 years and retired in 1992. Walt also owned several small family businesses with his sons and was involved in Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship and various youth ministries.

Walt was a hard worker and put his all into everything he did from his many roles in ministry, to his various jobs, to maintaining his home. He loved mowing his lawn, working on projects, helping people and more recently helping his oldest son, grandson and friends maintain the cow farm. He was a strong man with a great sense of humor, a hardy laugh and was known as a flirt. He was a wonderful storyteller and loved sharing stories of his many adventures. Most important to him was his relationship with the Lord. When asked what he would want his final message to be he said, “Make it to where I am going”.

He is survived by his children, Walter J. (Debbie) Caughel, Jr., Scott (Carla) Caughel and Lori Caughel; grandchildren, Allison and Aaron Caughel; honorary son, Mike (Teri) Laskowski and their sons; brothers, Gary (Chris) Caughel and Roy (Kathy) Caughel; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, John Walter Caughel; siblings, Carolyn Yake, Daniel Caughel and Lyle Caughel; close friend and cousin, Dave Hall; and many other friends and family members.
