Richard J Patterson

Richard Joseph Patterson PhD, 84, of Port Huron Township, died Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

He was born July 8, 1939 in Mt. Clemens to the late Lee and Mabel (Vories) Patterson. He married Judith “Judy” Dalzen on December 27, 1962.

Richard was a graduate of St. Clair High School and Michigan State University. After earning his PhD, Richard taught at MSU and Southern Illinois University. He then returned to St. Clair County to work with his father-in-law at FRD Manufacturing and most recently was still employed in quality assurance with Bedco (Dalzen) Manufacturing.

Richard grew up on the Patterson Homestead Farm in Columbus and as a young man, he was involved in 4-H. He liked to tinker and fix things and coached girls’ basketball and softball for many years. He also enjoyed camping, spending time “up north”, and researching family history. Richard was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and was involved for many years, along with his wife, with the Bereaved Parents of the Blue Water Area.

He is survived by his wife of 61years, Judy; three children, Karen Patterson, Jennifer (Ed) Robinson and Rebecca (Doug) Steward; grandchildren, Rachel, Heather and Kurt Robinson; sister, Mary Ellen (Martin) Dolan; many nieces and nephews; and loyal companions Toby and Mew. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Jim, Jack, Bill and Bob.

Private services have been held.

Burial was in Kittridge Cemetery, Columbus Township.
