Obituary

Herbert Edward “Bud” Mertz Jr., 87 of Marysville, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Bud was born April 29, 1936 in Port Huron to the late Goldie and Herb Mertz Sr. and was a lifelong resident of the Blue Water Area. He graduated from Port Huron High School in the Class of 1953, and promptly joined the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17. He proudly served his country for 4 years, working his way up to the rank of Sergent and spending a portion of his service time in Korea.

Bud met the love of his life, Eva K. Toodzio, and they were married on January 28, 1961 at St. Edward on the Lake Catholic Church in Lakeport. They were blessed with 63 years of marriage and 6 amazing children.

Bud provided for his family through a 30-year career with DTE. Always wanting to better himself, he earned an associate’s degree while working. Many wonderful memories were created at DTE parties and picnics through the years.

Bud was a quiet man with a sharp wit and sense of humor. He had a great faith in God, his country and his family. Many great memories will be cherished by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Eva; five children, Ed (Annie) Mertz, Judy (Dale) Dunn, Mary McNaughton, John Mertz and Jason (Kris) Mertz; 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and another on the way; three brothers; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews who always enjoyed a laugh with Uncle Bud, including a very special niece, Carey (Paige) Wilson. He was preceded in death by a son, Scott; one brother; and two sisters.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Marysville Funeral Home with a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m.

Mr. Mertz will lie in state from 10:30 until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 in St. Christopher Catholic Church. The Reverend Bradley Forintos will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery, Marysville. Military Honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Bud’s family would appreciate memorial donations to a suicide prevention charity of your choice.
