Virginia M. Engelgau, 99, of Lansing, formerly of Marysville, died Friday, August 16, 2024.

She was born June 10, 1925 in Port Huron, the daughter of the late Fred and Eva Askar. She married Eugene F. Engelgau on July 4, 1942 in Alabama. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1969.

Virginia was employed as a switchboard operator at Port Huron Paper, later known as Domtar, for many years before her retirement. She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose and a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church where she served in the Altar Society. A long-time Detroit Tigers fan, she was beloved by many, was a wonderful mother-in-law, and always knew how to have a good time.

She is survived by her son, Fred Engelgau of Mason; daughter, Janice A. Turner of Lansing; granddaughter, Carlene Engelgau of Lansing; and niece, Linda Stoldt. She was preceded in death by her brother, George Askar; sister, Jeanette Tanner; niece, Sherry Murray; two nephews, Fr. George Askar and DJ Askar; cousins, Eleanor Eifert and Gordon Widmeyer; and dear friend Betty Williams.

Private family services will be held.

The family prefers memorial contributions be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America or the American Cancer Society.
