Howard J Ferns

Howard John Ferns, 80, of Fort Gratiot, died Saturday, January 11, 2025.

He was born January 5, 1945 in Brisbane, Australia to the late William L and Doreen P. Ferns. He married Linda Ferns on June 17, 2022 in Port Huron.

Howard dedicated 20 years of his career to the railroad. After his retirement, he enjoyed a fulfilling and joyful life alongside his devoted wife, Linda. Howard had a passion for sports as a fan and as an active participant. He was a dedicated fan of both the University of Michigan football team and the Detroit Lions. He was an avid golfer with the Marysville Golf Course being one of his favorite places to play. He not only coached baseball, but joined the game himself and was also known to lace up his skates to coach hockey games.

Most of all, Howard cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren, and these family moments were at the heart of his life. Howard’s family and friends were his greatest joy.

He is survived by his wife of 2 ½ years, Linda; six children, Shelly (Todd) Harju, Shannon (Brandon) Pung, Howard (Kim) Ferns Jr., Andy Ferns (Taylor), Ann (Kevin) Houle and Jennifer Yancey; thirteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; brother, William (Andra) Ferns; sister, Bonnie Sackrider; many nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Ken McDermitt. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bradd J. Ferns. Private family services have been held.
