Fatema "Khuki" Hossain

July 28th, 1947 to May 21st, 2025

Fatema Hossain, known as “Khuki” to many who knew and loved her, passed away on May 21, 2025, following a courageous three-year battle with cancer.

She was born Fatema Begum on July 28, 1947, in Sitakunda Chittagong, Bangladesh to father Mulkutur Rahman and mother Kamalul Haya. She married Syed Showkat Hossain in 1969 before graduating from Dhaka Medical College in 1971. They came to the United States and eventually settled in Port Huron, Michigan, where they raised five children together.

Fatema was intelligent, witty, and mischievous. She was also welcoming and loving, which was on display every time she and Showkat hosted enormous gatherings in their lovely Port Huron home. Those who were fortunate to be invited to these gatherings looked forward to her authentic Bengali cooking, which she began to prepare days in advance, often for more than 100 guests. Despite her hard work, by the time her guests arrived, she was always put together and dressed in a beautiful sari to welcome them.

In addition to being an excellent cook, Fatema loved to work in her impeccable garden. She was also a talented seamstress, and created many Halloween costumes by hand year after year. A lesser-known talent of hers was that she enjoyed writing poetry in her spare time, which was quite good when she was convinced to share it. She was a loving mother and a doting grandmother, and appeared at countless sporting events, recitals, award ceremonies, and even rock concerts, to show her support for her children and grandchildren. When they visited, she loved to play carrom with them, always engaging in witty, competitive banter.

Fatema is survived by her husband, Syed Showkat Hossain, her children, Sadaat Hossain, Syeda MacEachern (Mark), Shumi Ferguson, and Shahida Hossain, grandchildren Gabriel and Maya Ferguson, Priya and Fiona Hossain, Judah and Eloise Hossain, and Linus MacEachern. She is also survived by her siblings, Mrs. Hasna Banu, Mrs. Khurshid Jahan, Mr. Yusuf Ahmed (Fauzia), Mr. Faruq (Farzana) Moinuddin, and Mr. Tareq (Khuku) Nizam, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her dear son, Syed Shafkat Hossain, and beloved siblings, Mr. Ahmed Khaled and Mrs. Nasim Ansari. Those who loved her will surely feel her presence in every beautiful flower garden and every lovingly prepared biryani that they experience.

The family will host visitation at Pollock-Randall Funeral Home in Port Huron, Michigan on Thursday, May 22, 2025 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and at IONA Masjid in Warren, Michigan, on Friday May 23, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Her burial will be at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Michigan, on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 1 p.m.
