James D Smith

James Douglas “Jim” Smith, 84, of Fort Gratiot, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

He was born on September 16, 1941, in Grand Rapids.

Jim loved classic Western sitcoms and was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan, often attending home games with his caregiver, Jessica. He looked forward to weekly outings to eat and visit Lakeside Cemetery with his caregiver, Norman. Jim also enjoyed coloring and playing his own version of solitaire. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by several cousins, including Linda (Scott) Wilber; his loving and devoted care staff, Jessica, Norman, Areiky, Jennifer, Dave and Nick; and his two roommates, Joey and Mike. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mozelle E. Smith; father, Charles A. Mertz-Smith; and brother, Louis A. Smith.

At Jim’s request, cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 2, 2026 in the Lakeside Cemetery Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
