Margaret J Spalding

January 26, 1936 to April 13, 2026

Margaret Joyce (Hurns) Spalding, of Palm Desert, California, formerly of Port Huron, moved on to her heavenly home on Monday, April 13, 2026.

This proud Irish girl had a very youthful spirit for all of her 90 years! During her lifetime she spread love, caring, compassion, concern - and beautiful laughter and smiles - to all who knew her. She will be missed every day - and sweet memories of her are treasured.

Margaret, usually called Joyce, was born January 26, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan to the late James Henry and Margaret Elizabeth (Lodge) Hurns. She had two older sisters, Mary and Ruth, whom she was close to all their lives.

Joyce literally fell into the arms of her future husband, Warren Beach Spalding III (known as Beach to friends and family). While attending Angell Elementary School in Detroit, Joyce fell down the stairs, but Beach caught her! It was love at first sight and she never let that boy get away! They married on August 7, 1952 in Detroit and continued a beautiful and loving marriage relationship for 74 years. Often during a conversation when talking about Beach, Joyce would say, “I married the love of my life!”

Joyce spent 42 years in the Port Huron area. For many of those years she was an active member of Ross Bible Church. She was also an avid Scrabble player, and was the director of the Port Huron Scrabble Club for many years. The club hosted some regional Scrabble tournaments, and she and other members also traveled throughout the United States and Canada to play in other tournaments. She loved Scrabble and her winning percentage was impressive... she was hard to beat!

Always competitive, no matter what age, Joyce enjoyed being part of “The Robinson” for many summers, and encouraged her children to do the same. Win or lose, they all had fun; but Joyce was the only one to bring home a trophy!

Joyce and Beach were both born in Detroit, and prior to their marriage had never left the state of Michigan. However, they both had adventurous spirits and developed a love for travel. Over the past 74 years, the pair completed their goal to visit all 50 states, several multiple times. They interspersed those state travels with visits to at least 5 continents.

Joyce is survived by her husband and their seven children, Margaret Sue (Richard) Seay, Patricia Kay (Rick) Greaves, Kathleen Joy (preceded in death by Bob) Wiedmann, Evelyn Marie (Mick) Burgett, Marjorie Joyce (Mark) Duncan, Warren Beach (Megan) Spalding IV and Colleen Mae (Andy) Kustowski; as well as 19 beloved and delightful grandchildren; and 10 fun and very lively great grandchildren ...and counting!

Parents, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews - as well as all her friends - were so important to her! She dearly treasured the special times she shared with all of them. You will now find Joyce in Heaven, where her Lord and Savior promised her an eternal home years ago. Many of her family and friends have been awaiting her arrival as she will await ours in the years to come.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, 2026 in the Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026 in the Pollock-Randall Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend Steve Scott will officiate.

Joyce will be laid to her earthly rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Fort Gratiot Township, where she knows the beauty of Michigan’s seasons will play on around her earthly remains forever.

Sending flowers is not practical, but we would enjoy so much to read your words of sympathy, comfort and memories of Joyce. For sharing, please visit pollockrandall.com
