John J Colt
John Joseph Colt, 75, of Marysville, died Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
He was born September 29, 1950 in Cobleskill, New York to the late Michael F. and Mona F. Colt. He married Denise M. Hollis on February 3, 1973 at St. Cyril Catholic Church in Alexandria Bay, New York after a whirlwind romance.
Chief Warrant Officer (Boatswain) Colt enlisted in the Coast Guard on January 5, 1970 from Training Center Cape May. His tours of duty were: Seaman at Loran Station Ocean Cape; Coxswain, BM3 and BM2 at Station Alexandria Bay; BM1 and Surfman at Station Cape Disappointment; BM1 aboard USCGC Eagle; XPO and BMC at Station Brant Point; Chief Warrant Officer aboard USCGC Eagle; First Lieutenant aboard USCGC Bramble and Group Detroit where he was Group Detroit Aids to Navigation Officer beginning in August of 1991. He made Chief Boatswains Mate in 12 years and Chief Warrant Officer in 16 years and earned the following awards: CG Bicentennial Unit Commendation, Commandant’s Letter of Commendation, 4 Good Conduct Medals, 2 National Defense Medals, The Humanitarian Service Medal, and the CG Special Operations Service Award. He retired from the USCG on September 13, 1996.
John was a lifelong lover of the water, especially the oceans and Great Lakes. He also enjoyed shooting sports and was a member of the Blue Water Sportsman’s Club.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Denise; two children, Tamara and Jerome Colt; eight siblings, Mike Colt, Brian Colt, Elizabeth Brill, Jennifer Colt Mead, Margaret “Peggy” Taney, Stephen Colt, Tom Colt and Christopher Colt; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Private inurnment will be in the Allied Veterans Columbarium, Port Huron. Military Honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Coast Guard.
