Marinus A Thoen

Marinus Adrianus Thoen, 77, of Marysville, died Friday, September 11, 2026 after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

He was born February 11, 1949 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands to the late Pieter and Josina ‘t Hoen and immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 16. Marinus met Shirley J. Visscher through mutual friends and they were married on July 18, 1981 in Holland, Michigan.

Marinus was a graduate of Hope College, earned a master’s degree in Religion and Philosophy from the University of California Santa Barbara, and a master’s degree in Social Work from Wayne State University. He enjoyed helping people in the community first as a social worker and later as a volunteer with Blue Water Home Care & Hospice. Marinus was a lifelong learner and loved studying history, especially WWII, and philosophy. He was a talented photographer, appreciated classical music, and enjoyed trips back to the Netherlands to visit family. Marinus and Shirley were lifetime members of the Christian Reformed Church and currently attended Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Marysville.

Marinus is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shirley; two daughters, Christina Thoen-Frank (Ronald Frank III) and Anna Thoen-Stamm (Alexander Stamm); a brother, Reverend Peter (Ann) ‘t Hoen; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Pastor Stephen) VanderWoude; brother-in-law, Brian (Cindy) Visscher; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026 in Maranatha Christian Reformed Church, Holland Michigan with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Stephen VanderWoude of Foundations Church in Ravenna will officiate.

Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery, Holland, Michigan.
