Denise Benjamin

Denise Joyce Benjamin, 76, of Clinton Township, died Sunday, September 27, 2026.

She was born February 14, 1950 in Port Huron to the late Earl “Red” Johnson and Joyce Kidd. Denise spent her early years in Port Huron where she excelled in school. After graduating from high school in 1968, she continued her education at Los Angeles City College. While in Los Angeles, she met James Luke Benjamin. They fell in love and were married. On January 31, 1972 she gave birth to a son, Dwynell LaFonce Benjamin.

Denise and her son moved to Detroit and she worked downtown at the City County Building for several years as a clerk. Denise continued her college education at University of Detroit Mercy receiving a Bachelor's degree on May 13, 1995. Afterwords, she worked at AT&T as a service representative until her retirement. Her love and compassion for people led her to working in a group home for those with mental and emotional challenges. She also loved children and worked as a substitute teacher in St. Clair County well into her 60s.

Her first love and passion were for God. In the late 1970s, one of Jehovah’s Witnesses knocked on her door. She was very interested in the message and began to study the Bible. On December 21, 1980 she was baptized at the Circuit Assembly of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Grand River in Detroit. She taught her son and grandchildren a true love for her God, Jehovah. She enjoyed sharing her beliefs with others she met, often witnessing in Port Huron. She especially enjoyed witnessing at the cart.

Denise will be remembered for her warm smile and tenderness; as well as her love for her son, grandchildren, her dog Julius, and most importantly her love for Jehovah.

Denise is survived by her son, Dwynell (Amanda) Benjamin Sr.; grandsons, Malik (Jordan) Benjamin, Dwynell Benjamin Jr, and Drayden Benjamin; step grandchildren, Adler Obermesik, Lathan Obermesik, and Kayin Obermesik; special cousin, Larry Noble; sister cousin, Joyce Monroe Noble; special friends, Michelle Hudson and Bridget Goudelock; and many more friends and family.

Private family services have been held.

Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron. Pallbearers were Dwynell Benjamin Sr., Malik Benjamin, Drayden Benjamin, Dwynell Benjamin Jr., Lathan Obermesik, Adler Obermesik, Cerrone Burton, and Demetrius Hayes.
