Mary J Hyssong

Mary Johanna Hyssong, 84, of Fort Gratiot Township, died Monday, May 27, 2013.

She was born October 9, 1928 in Port Huron to the late Rev. Otto and Minnie Pfotenhauer. She married M. Eugene Hyssong on June 15, 1957 in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He died March 28, 1966.

Mrs. Hyssong attended Trinity Lutheran School, graduated from Port Huron High in 1946, and attended Port Huron Junior College. She received her bachelor's degree with a major in voice from the U of M School of Music in 1951 and her master's degree in 1952. She taught at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania for five years and then taught at Glassboro State College and sang professionally. Upon her return to Port Huron, she taught voice and piano and was choir director and organist at Faith Lutheran Church. She was also employed in the office at First United Methodist Church. She was a lifetime member of Sigma Alpha Iota, the national honorary music fraternity, and also belonged to the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and Fidelis Guild at Faith Lutheran Church.

She is survived by three sons, Mark (Andrea) Hyssong of Franklin, Tennessee, Paul (Sally) Hyssong of Saline and Philip (Angie) Hyssong of Lombard, Illinois; and grandchildren, Trevor, Amanda, Regina, Adam, Levi, Savannah, Sammy, Lija and Zoe. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Otto and Barbara Pfotenhauer.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013 in Faith Lutheran Church with visitation beginning at 11:30 a.m. The Reverend C.J. Ransdell will officiate.
