Bertha I Smith
April 20th, 1916 to November 5th, 2013
Bertha Isabella Smith, 97, of Marysville, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 as the Lord wrapped his arms around her and said, “Your work is done and it’s time to come home.”
She was born April 20, 1916 in Brigdon, Ontario to the late Patrick and Eava O’Neill. She married Michael Smith on June 12, 1937 in Port Huron. He died August 9, 1980.
Mrs. Smith worked for the Port Huron Area School District as a cook before retiring in 1982. She was a longtime member of Gratiot Park United Methodist Church and their Women’s Society, and later Marysville United Methodist Church.
Bertha was always involved with some group that involved kids. She served as a Cub Scout pack leader out of Gratiot Park United Methodist Church for many years. She was a member of the YMCA Ladies group that put on programs for the kids, especially the Bean Feeds on Saturday afternoons (hot dogs, beans and a movie). She was involved with the PTA at Fillmore Elementary School serving in all positions and was president for three years. She helped with fundraisers of all kinds. If kids were involved, she was involved.
Mom was our Champion, taking us to our little league games and sitting in the stand cheering us both on, camping at Higgins Lake, taking us pheasant hunting and walking the fields with us. She even took us perch fishing on Lake Huron and she couldn’t even swim. Her list goes on and on. She did everything for us!
Mom’s first job after we got older was with Mrs. French at Garfield Junior High School where she worked in the kitchen helping prepare students’ lunches. After six years there, she transferred to Port Huron Northern High School as Head Cook, completing 28 years with the Port Huron School District.
When she retired, Mom moved to Vicksburg Halls in Marysville and loved having her own apartment for almost 30 years. While there, she was very active putting on special lunches and participating in the many programs and activities offered at the facility. She was never still, but kept busy helping others.
Mom loved all her grandchildren, especially the little ones.
There wasn’t anyone who ever met her that didn’t like her. She was always smiling and considerate of everyone. She was a soft and genuine lady in every way.
She is survived by two sons, Michael (Terri) Smith of Jeddo and Malcolm (RaeAnn) Smith of Marysville; six grandchildren, Suzanne (Hewey) Anger of Port Huron, Randy (Tracy) Smith of Marysville, Dana (Larry) Stewart of Canton, Georgia, Scot (Kelly) Smith of Marysville, Dr. Drew (Jennifer) Smith of Howell and Shari (Ted) Seides of Greenwich, Connecticut; eleven great grandchildren; a sister, Joan Reid; sister-in-law, Dorothy O’Neill; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and Harold O’Neill; and two sisters, Beth Fenner and Eavaleen Barber.
Visitation will be from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Thursday in the Marysville Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 8, 2013 in the Marysville Funeral Home. The Reverend Barbara E. Welbaum of Marysville United Methodist Church will officiate.
Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron. Pallbearers will be Bertha’s grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gratiot Park United Methodist Church or Marysville United Methodist Church.
Bertha’s family would like to thank the staffs of Medilodge of St. Clair and Season’s Hospice for the wonderful and loving care that they gave our mother.
