Dr. Robert W. Coulter, age 97, long time resident of Port Huron, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2016.
He was born April 22, 1918 in Detroit to the late Earl and Audrey Coulter. He married Barbara Tomlinson on July 20, 1942 in Port Huron. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2005.
Robert served in the United States Airforce during WWII. He graduated from Port Huron Junior College and went on to earn bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees from Wayne State University. Robert served the community as Superintendent of the Port Huron Area School District and as a board member of Child and Family Services, St. Clair County Community College Alumni Association, YMCA, International Symphony, Boy Scouts of America, and Rotary Club International.
Robert especially loved working and sailing as a volunteer on the Highlander Sea, volunteering at The Maritime Center, and piloting a small plane.
He is survived by his son, David (Ellen) Coulter; daughter, Christine Elswick; six grandchildren, William (Melissa) Coulter, Jeffrey (Ashley) Coulter, Lori (Dale) Bolyard, Brian (Tanika) Elswick and Dalana Coulter; eleven great- grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; sister, Mae Pascher; several nieces and nephews; and many precious friends. Robert was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Barbara; his parents Earl and Audrey Coulter and stepmother, Marjorie Coulter; brother, Earl Coulter; and sister, Virginia Wendt.
A memorial service for Dr. Coulter will be held at 11:00 am on June 17, 2016 in First Congregational Church, Port Huron.
Memorials may be made to the Port Huron Rotary Foundation or the SC4 Alumni Board Scholarship Fund.
