William R Johnston

September 26th, 1940 to April 16th, 2018

William Robert Johnston, 77, of Port Huron, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 16, 2018 after a brief illness.

He was born September 26, 1940 in Port Huron to the late Eugene and Dorothy Johnston. He married Gloria Krampien on December 9, 1961 in Port Huron.

William served 2 years in the U.S. Navy on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Forrestal during the Vietnam era. He received his Ph.D. from Wayne State University and did research at Henry Ford Hospital for six years. He then became a teacher at Port Huron Northern High School where he was twice selected as "Most Influential Educator" by the graduating senior class. He was affectionately known as “Dr. J” by his students.

William was an active member of Griswold Street Baptist Church where he was at one time a deacon, member of the mission board and a youth group leader. He was involved in jail ministry for 35 years and received the City of Port Huron Brotherhood Award in 2006. He enjoyed hiking and spending time with his family. However, regardless of all of his achievements and recognition, his greatest passion was his love for the LORD and his desire to serve Him.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gloria; daughter, Michelle; siblings, Harriet (Ronald) Senger, Kathleen (Donald) Shevnock, Charles (Maria) Johnston, Dr. Nancy Marshall and Stephen Johnston; sister-in-law, Carol Johnston; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael, and infant brother, Donald.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 pm Friday, May 4, 2018 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, May 5, 2018 in Griswold Street Baptist Church. The Reverend Randy Morgan and Dr. Timothy North will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Navy and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
