Alice M Shafer

January 18th, 1943 to October 14th, 2022

Alice Mae Shafer, age 79, went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 14, 2022.

She was born on January 18, 1943 in Detroit to the late Donald and Dorothy Flaherty, the firstborn of identical twins.

She was raised in the faith, and as a child she attended Bethesda Missionary Temple in Detroit while they lived in Centerline.

She also lived in Lexington, MI where she talked about rollerskating the hills with her siblings.

On July 29, 1961 she married Donald Shafer. Together they raised 5 children. When Don lost some fingers in an industrial accident, she encouraged him to re-learn how to play the guitar again by teaching her.

When they returned to Bethesda Bible Church in 1976, they were installed as deacons. They lead a group of singers and musicians to nursing homes and shut-ins playing, singing hymns and of course, praying. They considered themselves prayer warriors, and she certainly was!

She also helped write and illustrate a Sunday school curriculum, which incorporated catechism concepts. She made flannelgraphs and elaborate visual object lessons. In her later years she taught herself how to play the piano and she played it faithfully, everyday.

No matter where she attended she continued with the programs and elaborate visual object lessons for the children. All her life she served the Lord daily and called on Him until the very last minute.

She is survived by three children, Sheri (Garland) Bryant, Steven (Misty) Shafer and Craig (Laura) Shafer; eight grandchildren, Jessica, Garland II, Austin, Steven, Nicole, Meadow and her beloved twins, Craig and Anthony; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Eugene Shafer; and daughter, Debbie Parker. She was the last living sibling, preceded in death by twin sister, Jeanne “Anne” Zapata; sister, Ruth Kish; and two brothers, Paul “John” and Sam Flaherty.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Blue Water Christian Church.
