Charles Raymond “Chuck or Charlie” Kott, 91, of Port Huron Township, passed away Friday, October 13, 2023 in the presence of his loving family. He was born September 18,1932 in Detroit to the late Gustav and Charlotte Kott. Chuck served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a pitcher in the U.S. Army and the New York Giants Minor League Baseball teams from 1951-1956. Chuck started his career as a Tool and Die Engineer/Draftsman during high school in Detroit. He moved to the Port Huron area in the 1970’s as a Design Engineer at St. Clair Metal Products and Riverside Metal. Passionate about the design and build aspect of the industry, he became a partner and owner of Preferred Industries in 1985. Chuck retired at the age of 90 in 2022 and continued to be invested in the company for the rest of his life. He took great pride in the business and employees. He was a member of The Elks Lodge #343, where he enjoyed playing euchre, pool, and socializing with friends. He was an avid golfer and spent a great deal of time on Port Huron’s golf courses. He loved spending time with family and friends, woodworking, cooking and cultivating his garden of nearly 200 Iris plants. He had an admiration for vintage cars and enjoyed taking his award-winning 1931 Ford Coupe to local car shows. He is survived by daughters, Karen (Dave) Barber and Sandra (Alex) Morton; son, Brad Ellis; grandchildren, Rosanna (Donald) Kott, Katie (Ryan) Levin, Jessica Lange (Niall Kerins), Gabrielle and Alex Morton and Travis Shafer; great grandchildren, Cherikee and Donald “D.J.” Kott and Grayson Levin; sister, Joyce Gambrell; several nieces and nephews; long-time friends Marv Ohrling and Joseph Mericka; and companion, Susan Austin. A Lodge of Sorrow to honor Chuck will be held at the Port Huron Elks Lodge #343 on Saturday, October 21 at 1:00 pm followed by an open visitation with light refreshments from 1:30-5:00 p.m. Chuck’s family would love for friends with classic cars to drive them to the Elks on Saturday for “one last car show” (weather permitting). Parking near the entrance will be reserved. Private family graveside services took place at Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron with Military Honors under the auspices of the U.S. Army. The family is choosing to honor Chuck with donations to charity in lieu of flowers. Donations to Blue Water Hospice, Elks Lodge #343, or any charity are welcome.
