Eugene Schommer
Eugene Walter Schommer, 89, of Port Huron, died Friday, February 24, 2012.
He was born October 12, 1922 in Carsonville to the late Charles and Mary Schommer. He married Barbara Ann Schlicht Thompson on August 25, 1967 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Port Huron.
Mr. Schommer was a carpenter and cabinet maker. He served in the U.S. Army in Africa, France and Italy during World War II and received the Purple Heart after being injured at Anzio. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He belonged to the coffee group at the El Rancho Restaurant.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Genevieve “Babe” (Rocco) Zaccagnino and Therese Dobrich; and two sons, Mark (Susan) Thompson and Dale Thompson; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters, Genevieve Szweb and Elizabeth Ball; a sister-in-law, Betty Schlicht; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul E. Thompson; and a grandson, Paul A. Thompson.
Visitation will be 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2012 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Reverend John Carrier of Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate.
Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.
