Charles W Philp

Charles W. Philp passed away peacefully at Lake Huron Medical Center on December 21, 2023.

He was born on March 29, 1931 in Port Huron, Michigan to Byron W. and Marjorie Locke Philp.

Charles graduated from Port Huron High School in 1948. He attended Michigan Tech College and graduated from Michigan State College in 1953. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering and was inducted into the engineering honorary fraternity, Tau Beta Pi. Upon graduation Charles was employed by General Electric Co. in Schenectady, N.Y.

In 1954 Charles entered the service of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served on the supply ship ‘The Arneb’ in the Arctic Circle and Baffin Islands.

Upon receiving his honorable discharge in 1956 Charles then continued his career at Mueller Brass Co. in Port Huron as Technical Superintendent. His professional memberships included American Society for Metals, American Society for Testing and Materials, and Copper Development Association.

During his residence in Port Huron Charles was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Noon Optimists, the YMCA men’s volleyball, and the Port Huron Yacht Club where he served as Commodore in 1972.

Charles made New York City his home for fifty years when he took a sales position with Amax Copper Inc. His career continued to advance when he took on the Safety and Health Program for Handy and Harman Ltd. and continued on as a consultant after his retirement.

He loved his family’s visits and introduced us to museums, stage plays on and off Broadway, his favorite Thai and Indian foods, Central Park in all seasons, walks along the East River, the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, and the memorable smell of burned embers as we stepped off the subway at Ground Zero.

He was known as Chuck and Dad to his family, and we loved having him back home for the last two years of his life. He treasured his family, his church family at Columbus Bible church, and his Lord. He sang gustily all the hymns and Christmas carols, and sing-alongs at Lakeshore Woods. He enjoyed watching the birds and the deer that came to his feeder outside his window. He was amused by the feral kittens who came running to be fed.

Charles will be remembered for his generosity, his perseverance, his love for his family and friends, and his trust in everlasting life.

He is survived by his daughters, Gayle Page and Lori Ganiatsas, and their mother Gloria Philp, Port Huron. Also surviving are his grandson, Jason Ganiatsas, Whitmore Lake; a brother, Paul and Katherine Philp in Bridgeport, Conn.; a nephew, Alan Philp in Lakewood, Colorado; and niece, Julianne Kaphar (Titus) in Hamden, Conn. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A private memorial service will be held by the family.
